Christian had a short workout, a team meeting and then an Ice Bath.
Seven minutes in a tub full of ice water doesn’t sound like much fun
to me but Coach assured me that it is good for the muscles. Tomorrow
is the big day and I think I might be more excited than Christian is!

I decided around the new year that I was going to run a marathon. The Chicago Marathon to be more precise. I ran my first “long run” on Sunday and it wasn’t too bad. It’s now Tuesday morning and my legs are sore but I am able to get around under my own steam though the stairs are bothersome. I own a GPS enabled watch with a heart rate monitor made by Garmin. I like the watch a lot and it allows me to upload my runs to the web where I can review all of the stats. I will be linking to those results here and I will try to write about my experiences as a first time marathoner. I am not new to running, I have been running with in the summers for years as a group leader in Building Steam. That being said, I do not consider myself a runner though. I don’t take it very serious and once the weather starts to turn bad I stop running altogether. Okay, so that’s the background and here is are the stats from my last run. See you next week.

It’s been a while since I have written about it, mostly because it has been a while since we’ve done anything with it. More than a few years ago now, my cousin and I started a little business, Khomodo, with modest expectations. We wanted to start a web hosting service that didn’t suck. We have been through a couple of additional partners, but none of them had the vision or invested interest that Ian and I have. We didn’t expect to be able to make it a full time business at first but certainly thought that it would get there in due time. Well, for one of us, that time has come. I want to welcome Ian as Khomodo’s first quasi-full-time employee. Ian is finally going to take some time away from the grind of running restaurants for other people and devote his time to free-lancing webdesign and drumming up hosting work for Khomodo. Ian is incredibly talented, creative and motivated. He is an employers wet-dream; if he doesn’t know it, he’ll learn it. If he knows it, he’ll do it better than the next guy. I’ve never known anyone who will work harder and devote so much of his own time to his work. That being said, it’s time for Ian to rejoin the living. His family and friends miss him. We’re tired of only catching a token glimpse of his shadow around the holidays. Ian, you are a man, not a sasquatch, it is time to come out of hiding, Khomodo welcomes you with open arms.

As it looks right now, Ian will be starting out by focusing on design and integration of Drupal, a very full featured content management system (CMS) and likely doing some WordPress themes and other web design work as it comes available. Let me first say that Digital “Rights” Management (DRM) has nothing to do with copy protection or the “rights” of the artist or the user.  DRM does not stop peer-to-peer file sharing and it never will.  For most people, making an audio CD from their DRM’d copy of a song they purchased from iTunes and then ripping that to MP3 will be good enough quality for what they’re likely to use the songs for.  Sure it’s not easy or fun but for those that are really into file sharing, it’s a labor of love.  Nature always finds a way.
The RIAA would like you to think that new and creative forms of DRM are their future and that this is good for the consumer.  It’s good for the RIAA!  They get to charge you again and again for music you have already purchased and have a legal right to make copies of and in some cases even redistribute.  Lets take a step back for a moment and think about why allofmp3.com is so popular and why it can and will work for the music and movie industry.  I am certain that allofmp3.com is operating legally in Russia due to some quasi-legal loophole.  I am almost certain that it is not legal for a US resident to purchase, own or redistribute any music obtained from allofmp3.com while physically residing in the US.  Legal or not, the people over at allofmp3.com are making money!  Probably a lot of it.  We are talking about people buying the quality of music they choose for a reasonable rate.  No track downloaded from allofmp3.com has any DRM.  None!  But people are going there and buying music!  They are paying for something because to them, it has value.  To them the value is they can get a quality downloaded song that they can plan on any music player from any vendor.  The rest of the music industry would do well to recognize this success and embrace it.  If iTunes and Napster and the rest of the gang would all stop with the DRM madness and just sell a quality song that is not crippled with DRM they would see more sales not less.

RIAA and company; embrace allofmp3.com and watch your profits and customer relationships flourish.

As many of you are probably unaware, our government, the one that has in the past afforded so many of us the freedoms that we take for granted every day, is slowing and deliberately taking away that which our ancestors fought so vigorously for. Our Freedom.

The NSA is now allowed to listen in on our phone calls without probable cause and without a warrant. The phone companies are giving away our information like it was free. Supposedly we’re “cracking down” on illegal immigration but really, the immigrants, legal or otherwise, are the only ones that seem to understand and care about the freedoms and opportunities this very country affords each of us every single day. Don’t stand for it! Don’t let the government and corporate America tell you who you can talk to, what you can do with the very goods you buy and for God’s sake… don’t give up your privacy! To those that would say “if you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about”, please take a moment to understand that by giving up your privacy you are also giving up your freedom. Not just your freedom of speech but your freedom to be an individual.
